In 2013 we were fascinated by the history of the Britannia Panopticon, a hidden gem just a few minutes walk from our studio, the oldest surviving music hall is a wonderful venue. Our animation group decided to create a story about it and done very well in recreating the space in miniature.
Our drama group was also inspired by the style of Music Hall and done a fantastic job of researching all the different acts that made up a music hall show and recreated many of the elements in a great show.
I’m OK is a song produced by patients in McKinnon House in Stobhill hospital. This was part of a longer term arts programme funded by Lankelly Chase Foundation.
This particular part of the project was to engage patients in a music group, as the group developed in confidence it was their idea to create a song together. The lyrics and composition was created by the patient group assisted by Nemo Arts tutors to record the song.
Words Inc. was a devised piece of theatre, produced by members Nemo Arts community group in 2012, and based on the inner struggle that those with mental issues experience, in attempting express themselves.
A short animation created in 2012 about Earnest and his journey back into work after being off due to illness. This shows the struggles he has to overcome and the methods he implements to help himself and others.
Using animation is a fantastic way to explore serious issues in a fun and creative way. This is one of the first projects where we had patients attending from Rowanbank Medium Secure Unit and some of our community members working together. In patients attending our sessions in the community is now an everyday occurrence.
Nemo Arts 10th anniversary celebrations were held at the Scottish parliament on 28th October, supported by Linda Fabiana MSP.
Joining us in our celebrations was Kenny MacAskill, Justice Minister who gave us a characteristically forthright speech on the importance of the individual building confidence and self esteem and having the skills to move forward taking responsibility for their actions
Nemo Arts are working in partnership with HMP Barlinnie and this event focused on the great work going on there.
Andy spoke of how he had been in prison 8 times and of his experience in attending Nemo Arts how it has helped him come off drugs, reconnect with his family and stop offending he has been out of prison for 3 years and now volunteers 4 days a week.

In October 2010, the drama group from Nemo Arts performed their piece, A Simple Little Melody, in the Village Theatre, East Kilbride as part of Mental Health Week, which ran in the first week of October.
The cast consisted of participants from our Sunday Workshops, who performed Scottish and Irish songs, musical theatre and pieces with a comedy theme.
This project, funded by BBC Children in Need, was designed to bring family groups together to promote better communication and develop relationships within the family unit. There were three elements to this project.
Music, The group worked with Gregg Muir to create atmospheres sound scapes using a range of instruments as well as using recycled materials to create new types of instruments with unique sounds. The compositions were then recorded and played during the live performance.
Drama, Working with Hugh McCue the group devised sections of live performance which portrayed the difference in movement and mood for each of the animal groups in the story
Visual Art/Animation, The animated film was designed as a back drop to the live action to show the degradation of the landscape over the time of the performance. The participants were involved in the building of the miniature set and filming the animation. The visual art aspect of the project led by Rachel Toner was used to design the costumes and the parts of the set on stage.
This animation was created in partnership with The Lodging House Mission. A homeless support service in Glasgows East End. Working with participants over a 12 week project they learned how to create characters, build set, photography, script writing and so much more.
